The finding
We search היטלר (Hitler, transliterated to Hebrew) in Deuteronomy with skips from 2 to 2000. Being a 5-letter word with relatively frequent Hebrew letters, we'll find multiple hits.
The controversy
Drosnin's argument: the presence of the name with small skips, especially when crossing with related terms (נאצי, שואה), constitutes evidence of an intentional pattern.
McKay et al. (1999): in any sufficiently long text, names of anyone — politicians, criminals, celebrities — can be found as ELS. They demonstrated this by finding world leaders' names encoded in Moby Dick.
Drosnin famously responded: "When my critics find a message about a prime minister's assassination encrypted in Moby Dick, I'll believe them." McKay accepted the challenge and published the finding of Yitzhak Rabin's assassination encoded in Moby Dick.
How to evaluate honestly
An isolated search of a famous name proves nothing. What would prove something: (1) rigorous statistical analysis with permuted control texts, (2) a specific hypothesis formulated before searching, and (3) a coherent thematic pattern with multiple converging related terms.
